California legislators are looking into ways to reform Caltrans.

Senator Mark DeSaulnier is leading the efforts. He says it's important for Caltrans to reform and modernize.

"Economists tell us that infrastructure for both education and transportation are incredibly important to keep the economy growing," DeSaulnier said.

For years, the state highways were a model for the nation. But what have we offered lately?

"We've got to provide for new product, but the way we provide for it has to be much more efficient, much more transparent and much more accountable. The voters don't think we are being accountable with their hard earned tax dollars," he said.

DeSaulnier says the Bay Bridge project was a black eye for the state, and repairs were years late, too over budget, and still not done correctly.

He says CalTrans and state leaders need to do better.
