The Sacramento Area Council of Governments is getting involved in the debate over potentially dangerous oil shipments, which would run through local communities by train.

SACOG members are very concerned about the likelihood Benicia will approve a plan by the Valero Corporation to bring crude oil to its refinery on trains running through Northern California cities including Sacramento, Roseville and Davis.

Staffers have drafted a letter condeming the proposal for twice-daily shipments of 70,000 barrels of crude.

In the just released letter, SACOG says the plan is "fundamentally flawed."

They also say federal officials call the train shipments an "imminent hazard."

The Benicia reports conclude an oil spill could likely happen every 111 years, but there's worry too about the explosion risk.
