A local man is being called a hero after saving his four children from their burning townhome.

When Sacramento Fire Crews arrived at the complex on Creek Edge Way around 1:15 this morning, they saw smoke and fire coming out of every window and opening in the apartment unit, but Deon Hill made sure the blaze didn't cost him his children.

"Incredibly heroic actions by the father to first get his three kids out that were in the downstairs kitchen area and then he made it back inside to grab his youngster at the top of the stairs and got her out of the building with him as well," said Battalion Chief Rusy Van Vuren.

Van Vuren says he USUALLY doesn't use the word hero...

"...but in this case it applies, he did something phenomenal."

After saving his four young children, Hill was taken to UC Davis Hospital where family members say he's in the intensive care unit.

Hospital officials list his condition as "serious."
