As the patient care scandal continues to ripple through the VA system, our local veteran's hospitals are doing their best to keep up with demand.

In fact, a new outpatient facility opened at Mather Airport just last month.

"We provide care to about 80,000 veterans a year. We actually have 11 sites of care, not just Mather," said David Stockwell, medical center director for the Northern California VA.

Stockwell says his system is routinely ranked as one of the best. Wait times are 45 days for elective procedures, lower than the national average.

"The catchment area for the population of veterans that we serve is about the size of the state of Ohio. So, lots of geography," Stockwell said.

As we reported Friday, Stockwell says his local centers still feel like they're under the microscope because of what's happening nationally.
