Longtime California Democratic Congressman Henry Waxman has announced he is retiring from Congress.

Waxman has been a strong liberal voice in Congress for 40 years and has a long list of legislative acheivements capped by passage of the Affordable Care Act.  He says providing health coverage to all Americans was a life long dream.

He's been a force behind food safety and environmental laws over the decades, and his investigations into everything, from the dangers of tobacco to abuses in nursing homes have had wide ranging impact.

He joins a growing list of senior house members in both parties deciding to retire this year.
