It looks like college students looking to make big bucks from internships should start heading west, not east.

A new survey conducted by shows that most of the companies staffed with handsomely compensated interns are based in the Silicon Valley.

Number one on the list this year is Palantir, the Palo Alto-headquartered software development group that pays its interns an average monthly base pay of just over $7,000.

Social media giants dominate the rest of the top five. Twitter comes in at number three with almost $6,800, followed closely by LinkedIn and Facebook.

Rounding out the top 10 are Microsoft, eBay, Exxon Mobil, Google and Apple.
