A 27-year-old man who helped launch the "Ice-Bucket Challenge" has died after raising 100-thousand dollars for ALS research.

The family of Dustin Covey says he was friends with Pete Frates, a former college baseball player who inspired the viral fundraising effort.

Covey had just finished a fundraising campaign in Nantucket when he decided to high-dive from a wharf in its harbor.

"He had jumped from the roof into the harbor and reappeared at the surface for a short period of time and then sunk down and had not been seen for a period of time," said Lieutenant Jerry Adams from the Nantucket Police Department.

Adams says the exact cause of death is still under investigation.
