Mayor Kevin Johnson is making it clear the effort to bring Major League Soccer to Sacramento is not going to get the same financial backing as the new Kings arena.

Johnson is getting out in front of any speculation about city funding for a new soccer stadium.

As early as last weekend, the mayor reportedly insisted the city isn't going to participate financially in the emerging partnership between the ownership of the minor league Sacramento Republic FC and the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

The reason, according to city officials, is that Sacramento has taken on all the debt it can with the new multi-purpose downtown arena where the Kings will play.

However, everyone involved in the bid to bring an MLS franchise to Sacramento seems to think a soccer stadium can be built with private funding only.
