The world's largest money-transfer company is under scrutiny regarding wire-transfer scams.

Colorado-based Western Union announced Monday that a probe had been launched by the Federal Trade Commission and a U.S. attorney's office in Pennsylvania.

Consumers have reportedly complained about "fraud-induced money transfers" for at least several years.

Authorities want to find out whether the company has adequate controls to prevent scammers from using Western Union to collect money from their victims.
