The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominations for the 2014 Academy Awards today.

Three very different films are leading the way in the race for Academy Awards. The con-artist comedy "American Hustle'' and the outer-space survival story "Gravity'' have ten nominations each, while the historical epic "12 Years a Slave'' has nine. All three are nominated for best picture.

With the nominations now in, many are looking at who got left out. While many had predicted a possible nomination for Oprah Winfrey in "The Butler," she did not get the nod, nor did the film. Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks was also left out of the running for his turn in "Captain Phillips," although his co-star Barkhad Abdi is up for Best Supporting Actor and the film is nominated for Best Picture.

There was also some buzz about Robert Redford possibly getting a nod for "All Is Lost" but Redford's name is no where to be found on this year's Oscar nominations list, despite winning a Gotham Award and New York Film Critics Award for the same role. "August: Osage County" was also expected to be among this year's Best Picture nominees but it was not to be. The movie's star, Meryl Streep, did pick up her 18th Oscar nomination for her role in the film, extending her lead as the most nominated actor in the history of the Academy.

The Academy Awards will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, on March 2 on ABC.
