House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi says a raise in the federal minimum wage will help empower women throughout the country.

Speaking at a forum at Cal State Los Angeles today, Pelosi says just a wage increase will help women economically and help lift them up in the workforce.

She says women of color seem to be particularly disadvantaged when it comes to getting the pay they deserve. Pelosi supports President Obama's plan to bump the federal minimum wage from seven-dollars, 25 cents to ten-dollars, ten cents an hour.

In California, the state minimum wage currently sits at eight dollars an hour. It will increase to nine dollars an hour in July, and ten dollars an hour by 2016.
