They were looking to start a new life together, instead a 27-year-old Merced man is in jail for transporting a 14-year-old Connecticut girl across the country without her parents' permission.

They met online, talking for several months before they decided to make their move. The two formed a relationship.

It apparently got to the point to where she was willing to leave home in Connecticut and fly across country with him and start life anew.

Sgt. Jason Ramos with Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says the girl left a suicide note, and flew back to Sacramento with 27-year-old Nathan Salas Thursday. Hamden Connecticut police were able to go through the girl's social media accounts, figure out the plans, and have Sacramento Sheriff's Deputies waiting at Sacramento International Airport for the two.

"We're making arrangements for her to get transported home safely," Ramos said.

Salas is in jail on $100,000 bond.
