State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson has introduced a bill that prohibits forced or coerced sterilizations in prisons.

Senate Bill 1135 is in response to media reports last year of unlawful and coercive sterilization of female inmates at the Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women that were occurring as late as 2010.

Senator Jackson said “It’s clear that the law wasn’t strong enough, and as a result, we need to make sure that the unconscionable act of forced or coerced sterilizations never occur in our prisons again.”
