The pieces are picked up, but that doesn't mean the investigation into Thursday's deadly crash is over.

Highway patrol investigators are working to figure out why a woman, with two young children in her car, recklessly sped down I-80 Thursday afternoon. Losing control of her red SUV, she ran off the road.

Liz Dutton with the CHP describes the accident.

"The driver abruptly veered to the right, traveled off the roadway onto the shoulder, down a slight embankment and struck a tree," Dutton said.

The woman and a baby boy both died in the impact. A little girl in the car was critically injured and taken to UC Davis Medical Center.

"The child took the brunt of the impact," she said.

The Sacramento County Coroner's officer identified the victims of the crash as Carrie Tricia Sears of Encino and Skylar Eubanks, 4, of West Hills, according to the Sacramento Bee.

No other details about the accident have been released so far.
