Bad weather and contamination from household and industrial chemicals are complicating search and rescue efforts at the sight of the mudslide in Washington state.

Snohomish County officials said Hazmat teams were sent to possible contaminated areas to assess whether crews could safely work around them.

Heavy rain is also making it difficult for crews to work in the already unstable and muddy ground.

The official death toll remains at 17 with at least another ten presumed dead and dozens more still missing.
