Recent Storm Increases Avalanche Conditions

This week's winter storm brought up to a foot of snow to some areas in the high country.  If you're among the backcountry enthusiasts who'll be heading up to enjoy the conditions, don't forget to prepare for potential dangers.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department now reports avalanche conditions in the backcountry as considerable:

"Much of what we got earlier on in the year has frozen up and is ice, and now you've got wet snow sitting on ice," said Deputy Greg Almos.

He also reminds you to prepare in advance.

"Check those avalanche conditions before setting out.  Know your route selection and sticking to that plan, and ensuring that route selection you've chosen doesn't take you into those avalanche prone areas where there's inherent risk," Almos advised.

While it may seem obvious, it's worth saying anyway: never travel the backcountry alone.
