Report Claims Contractor Punished Workers Who Spoke Up About Safety Concerns
Posted Friday, August 1st 2014 @ 6am  by KFBK News - James Rojas

A Senate Committee's report on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge alleges the Chinese contractor working on the project punished those who raised safety concerns.

The State Senate report claims the contractor working on the project not only fired or demoted those who spoke up but also spent hundreds of millions of public dollars to pay employees to work faster, after the project fell behind schedule.

The report, released yesterday, claims the Shanghai-based contracting company attempted to keep many serious allegations quiet, saying it was part of an institutionalized -- if not malicious -- lack of transparency in the project.

The report cites construction problems over the past few years, including cracks in deck welds manufactured in China and snapped anchor rods with apparent corrosion in the cables.

A hearing next Tuesday will address the issues claimed in the report.
