Sacramento City Unified School District has named Jose L. Banda as the new superintendent.

Banda is coming to Sacramento from Seattle, where he was the superintendent of Public Schools. Banda is a veteran administrator with 34 years of experience in public education, including 30 years in California schools.

In his previous work, Banda has lifted struggling schools to excellence by focusing on equity and opportunities for students and engaging families and communities in district work.

Banda's appointment was approved by the Board at its meeting last night.

SCUSD has been without a permanent superintendent since the December resignation of Jonathan Raymond.

Dr. Sara Noguchi had been serving as interim superintendent after Raymond's departure.
