Sacramento Regional Transit has to complete an extension of the "Blue Line" over to Cosumnes River College in just over a year from now.

If the project isn't finished by September 6, 2015, then $135-million in federal money helping to pay for the extension could be lost.

Regional Transit project manager Ed Scofield told the Sacramento Bee that he believes the deadline can be met.

In the meantime crews are already laying track and working on stations near the college and at least one other South Sacramento location meant to encourage commuters to use light rail instead of driving up and down Highway 99, especially during the rush hours.
