Two Sacramento scientists were honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today for their work protecting California's rare vernal pools.

Vernal pools are a threatened variety of wetland that blooms with bright flowers of purple and yellow that circle the pools in the spring. There used to be thousands in our state but now only ten percent remain. Some are at Mather Field and another cluster is at Phoenix Park in Fair Oaks.

Dr. Robert Holland and Carol Witham received the Environmental Champion award today at a ceremony at the Sacramento Splash Education Center at Mather Field.
