Sacramento's Riverfront a Model for Curbing Obesity

Sacramento's Riverfront a Model for Curbing Obesity

This may seem odd at first blush, but Sacramento's riverfront is becoming a model ... on how to curb obesity rates.

The American River Parkway is being highlighted in a new UCLA report on ways to best improve health.

Dr. Richard Jackson says humans are innately drawn to water, and if there's an easy route to walk, run, or bike by it, we're more likely to.

He says other cities should take notice because every dollar invested in trails leads to three saved in medical costs.

"Los Angeles has a 50 mile river and you can barely walk or bike along that," Jackson said.

Mayor Kevin Johnson says in the coming months, he'll focus on filling in gaps in the river trail and further improving amenities.
