Just when you thought the news about California's drought couldn't get any worse, there's a Berkeley scientist who say you better think again.

When you hear the current drought is the worst since the 1840s, that might be an understatement -- by a few hundred years.

Berkeley Paleoclimatologist B. Lynn Ingram reportedly believes this dry spell is the worst in California in maybe 500 years.

Ingram studies fossils, tree rings, rocks and soil to get an idea of what the climate was like in the past.

She's suggesting California hasn't been through a drought like this since the late 1500s.

What's worse is that Ingram thinks we could be in for even worse droughts in the future if the past is any indicator.
