Sea Lion Deaths Linked to Decreased Sardine Population

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists say the large number of sea lion deaths could be attributed to a drop in sardine populations near Channel Islands.

Sea lions, humpback whales and elephant seals feed on sardines along the islands located just west of Ventura County in Southern California.

Experts believe the number of sardines have dropped and those that still exist have shifted spawning grounds away from the islands and from sea lion hunting areas.
