Senate OKs Gun-Check Bill Prompted by Isla Vista Shootings

The state Senate has approved a bill authored in response to the Isla Vista massacre.

Those who lost loved ones in May were in the chambers for today's vote on legislation that would allow law enforcement and family members to petition courts for "gun restraining orders," which would bar possession of firearms for three weeks.

The proposal surfaces three months after Elliot Rodger killed six UC Santa Barbara students and wounded 13 others.

Critics say the bill's language won't allow individuals to present much of a defense to the orders.

Amendments mean the law wouldn't go into effect until 2016.
