Senator Hopes to Put Warning Labels on Sodas, Sugary Drinks

Saying we're in the middle of an epidemic, a California lawmaker has a plan to reduce obesity and diabetes with a label.

The warning label would tell people sugary drinks can lead to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.  State Sen Bill Monning says labeling bottles, cans and vending machines will help you make better decisions about what you drink,

"Consumers have a right to know about the unique health problems associated with these sugar sweetened beverages," said the Senator.

Supporters of warning label bill include ethnic groups who say Hispanic and African-American communities are more at risk than others.  Chuck Finney with the California Soft Drink Assocation says the senator has it wrong,

"The main source of added sugar in the American diet is food, not the beverages they drink," Finney implored.

Sen Monning has unsuccessfully tried to pass a tax on sugary drinks as well.
