RIO LINDA, Calif. A man in a stolen car being chased by a California Highway Patrol officer missed a turn and rammed a brick wall. But that was just the beginning of his problems.

"That's when the driver put his car in reverse and came at the officer. The officers fired several rounds, the suspect then put the car back into drive and continued to Elkhorn Manner, where he dropped the car and took foot," Officer Liz Dutton said.

The incident began around 11:45 this morning near Elkhorn and Rio Linda Boulevards when shots rang out. Rio Linda Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution. The lockdown has since been lifted. Dutton says the man was chased down by officers from CHP and Sacramento sheriffs.

Only the stolen car was hit by the officers bullets.  A routine investigation into the shooting kept a stretch of 6th Street, between Elkhorn Boulevard and Lilac Place shut down through much of the early afternoon.
