Legislation signed by Governor Jerry Brown is giving extra time to small business owners to comply with the Affordable Care Act.

The passed bill is allowing individuals and small businesses to keep their existing healthcare coverage through 2015.

SB 1446 is giving individuals and small business owners almost two extra years to comply with the new minimum standards under the Affordable Care Act.

The bill was written to allow coverage extension for two years but was amended to include only one.

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones sponsored the bill and says this provides additional choices to those who choose to use the transition period.

Although some lawmakers and business groups said they supported Covered California’s decision at the time to require better coverage, support grew for the compromise.
