A new state Assembly committee is aiming to tackle the issue of hate crimes on the campuses of California universities.  Assembly Speaker John Perez announced the formation of the special committee Wednesday, saying there have been too many incidents in recent years of harassment or hate crimes on college campuses in the Golden State.

The committee comes in the wake of a recent incident at San Jose State University, where four students were accused of assaulting and racially bullying a black classmate.  Lawmakers say policy changes within the CSU, UC and other college systems may be needed to make campus climate better for all students.
