The State Assembly is taking a closer look at women in the workplace, forming a new select committee.
"California has been a leader on women's issues, and we want to make sure we remain a leader," Speaker John Perez said.
Perez made the announcement on equal pay day, a date that symbolizes how far into the year an average American woman needs to work to earn what an average man does. Democrats nationwide have been highlighting inequity.
"As a breadwinner mom myself, and a former labor leader, I've experienced first hand the ways in which our workplaces and schools can be more accommodating to women," Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales said.
Gonzales says the committee will look into not only pay, but availability of child care and sustainability of female-led households.
