SACRAMENTO -- A new report by the California State Auditor is critical of the state Department of Education for failing to monitor school safety laws.

The department is supposed to assess whether local agencies have adopted anti-bullying policies, under the Safe Place To Learn Act. But the state's audit found the department to be non-compliant.

The California Department of Education released a statement acknowledging the concerns and saying it will continue to work with the auditor to reinforce a positive school environment.
