State Senate Democrats Eye Ethics Reforms in Wake of Scandals

They've lost public trust.  Democrats in the State Senate are proposing ethics reforms in the wake of recent scandals.

With two senators on leave fighting criminal charges, there's a push being made to tighten laws on both lawmakers and lobbyists.

"Year after year, the media and constituents raise legitimate concerns about the legal practices currently permitted under state law," said Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg.

Steinberg went on to say that a new package of bills will ban fundraisers at lobbyists' homes and ban specific kinds of gifts like tickets to theme parks, concerts, sporting events.

"Cash and gift cards from all sources," added Senator Ricardo Lara.

Gift amounts would be also capped at $200 from a single source.

That's down from nearly $500 annually.
