The state Senate has OK'd a bill to limit detentions of illegal immigrants. AB4, authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, would prohibit local law enforcement agencies from detaining people for deportation if they are living in the country illegally and are arrested for a minor crime. Some critics of immigration checks say too many people are being deported when they aren't actually dangerous. Opponents of the bill say it runs up against federal law and could bring about funding or constitutional issues.
