Three Democratic Senators are looking to institute the first statewide ban on single-use bags.
Senator Alex Padilla authored a similar bill that failed last year. This one seems to have more traction, which has prompted a new advertising campaign from plastics manufacturers.
They say the bill is a money grab by grocers, that stand to make billions of dollars, ten cents at a time. That would be the charge for paper bags or more heavy duty, re-usable plastic bags at checkout stands. The bill has cleared its first committee hearing and must pass both chambers by mid August.
