STUDY: CA Universities Need to Do More To Prevent Sex Assaults

A new report says California's universities need to do more to prevent sexual assaults.

The state auditor says campuses must do a better job of educating both students and staff about what to do about when assaults occur.

Spokeswoman Margarita Fernandez says records were pulled at four UC and CSU schools, including UC Berkeley.

"What we found was that key roles of this reporting process do receive adequate training, but others who are likely to be the first point of contact are not receiving the training," Fernandez said.

That includes resident advisers in dorms or athletic coaches.

Faults were also found in how students were -- or weren't -- kept informed about the outcomes of their cases.

The audit was authorized after nine Berkeley students accused campus officials of treating their assaults too lightly.
