The teen accused of torturing and killing an elderly Davis couple has made his first court appearance.

Daniel William Marsh, 17, is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Marsh is facing two counts of murder with special circumstances, including lying in wait and torture.

In his first court appearance yesterday, video of Marsh's interview with detectives shows the teenager, 16 years old at the time, describing what happened the night Oliver Northup and Claudia Maupin were stabbed and killed while in their sleep back in April of 2013.

Prosecutors say Marsh roamed the streets in black clothing with a hunting knife, checking as many as 50 doors in south Davis before entering the couple's condominium.

Marsh's attorney says his behavior was fueled by the drugs doctors had prescribed for his depression and rage.
