Specialized wheelchairs and other equipment for disabled athletes was stolen and vandalized during a break-in near the Pannell Community Center on Meadowview.

Police say thieves targeted a storage shed at the River Cats Independence Field sometime Sunday. Damage is estimated at more than $25,000. Some of the items taken include special bikes, a PA system, tennis rackets and beeping baseball bases for the blind.

Independence Field has a special rubberized surface and is often used by disabled children and veterans. The City is taking donations to replace some of the equipment. You can go to and select Access Leisure Programs or mail donations to Gifts to Share, 915 I Street, Third Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814.

The River Cats are holding their own fundraiser as well. Anyone who attends the free Preseason Party at Raley Field this Sunday and makes a minimum $20 donation can take a five-swing batting practice on the field.
