UPDATE, Sunday 10:45 a.m.
This morning, police said they had identified the shooter as Darion Marcus Aguilar, 19. He arrived at the mall with a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition and two devices police believe we're meant to be used as explosives. Police still haven't released a motive in the crime.
Aguilar killed two others before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.
UPDATE 3:45 p.m.
Police have identified the two retail employees killed at the shooting at a Maryland mall.
The victims are Brianna Benolo, 21, and Tyler Johnson, 25, the Associated Press reported.
Both victims worked at Zumiez, a shoe and skate apparel store.
UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.
Officials in Howard County, Maryland, say three people are dead after a shooting at the Columbia Mall, confirming an adult male and female, both in their 20s and reported to be employees of Zumiez were shot and killed this morning.
Bill McMahon, Howard County Police chief confirmed a shotgun was the weapon used, but walked back earlier reports that the shooting may have been related to a domestic dispute.
Three people are dead after a shooting today in a Washington, D.C.-area mall.
"At about 11:15 this morning, our 911 center received a number of calls for shots fired at the Columbia Mall. We had officers quickly get into the area and we were able to identify three victims at an upper level store in the Columbia Mall. There are still a lot of details we need to confirm, but right now we that that one of the deceased is in fact the shooter," Howard County Police Chief Bill McMahon said in a news conference Saturday.
This woman works at the mall in Columbia. She was cutting a child's hair at the time of the shooting, and quickly searched for a place to hide.
"We just went back behind a stairwell, and we just all huddled. We just held the door with our hand, it was like 20 people behind the stairwell, and that is where we stayed for like an hour," she said.
NBC 4 in Washington reports witnesses described the weapon as a shotgun.
People living near the Columbia Mall in Maryland are being asked to avoid the area.
Four people from the mall were transported to Howard County General Hospital and are listed in good condition.
The mall released a statement saying it is still in lockdown as police investigate. The mall will remain closed at least for the rest of the day.
The busy shopping center is located about 40 minutes from the nation's capital.
