The transgender woman accused of shooting a man on Sacramento's Light Rail last week made her first court appearance this afternoon.

Her head held down and eyes looking toward the floor, 32-year old Lynnsey Braun stood before Judge Laurie Earl.

"Miss Braun, it alleges in this complaint that on January 23rd, 2014 in the county of Sacramento, you committed a felony in that you did unlawfully and with malice of forethought murder Derek McAster," Earl said.

Braun said she could not afford an attorney and would like to have one appointed.  At the Public Defenders request, the case will resume next Monday, February 3rd at 8:30am.

Following the hearing, Prosecutor Anne-Marie Schubert spoke with half a dozen member of the victim's family before taking questions from the media.  Schubert says the defendent's gender will not be a factor in the case, saying the court will only look at Braun's conduct.

No motive has been established at this time.
