More than twenty thousand fans packed Hughes Stadium on Saturday night for the Sacramento Republic’s inaugural home opener.
This first game was an important test for the team and the community to show Sacramento is ready for big league soccer.
The team’s leaders have made it clear the goal is to become a major league soccer franchise.
Team President Warren Smith spoke to News 10: 'Our goals were for the first year, put out a strong brand and a good team and 6,750 people per match and then start working on the other things that ultimately they need. That's a downtown stadium and ownership group. But really, we see a three-year plan to ultimately acquire a franchise at the MLS level and open up a downtown urban core stadium in year five.'
The Harrisburg City Islanders beat Republic FC 2 to 1.
