The whooping cough epidemic in California is getting worse. State Epidemiologist Dr. Gil Chavez says in the past two weeks, 1,100 new cases of pertussis have been reported.

"We are very fortunate to have a vaccine to combat pertussis that works quite well when administered during pregnancy to protect the infants in their first months of life until they can be vaccinated and develop their own immunity,"

The new infections brings the total number of  cases this year to nearly 4,600.

That far surpasses the numbers from all of 2013. Another infant has died from the disease, bringing the total number of deathis this year to three.
