A Yuba County Sheriff deputy was taken into custody Friday in Chico in connection with a St. Patrick's Day altercation. He allegedly beat a man unconscious, stomped and kicked him when he was on the ground, and then threatened a witness who followed the deputy while calling 911.

Thirty-one-year-old Nelson Magana was selected as the Yuba County Officer of the Year in 2010, and was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the altercation.

He posted $150,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 11, and has been placed on paid administrative leave.
