More than 30 recent graduates from San Juan Unified School District got to take part in a Target shopping spree to purchase items for their first year of college.
The recent graduates were treated to a $300 gift card, courtesy of nonprofit Kids Helping Kids, to buy essential dorm-room items like sheets, plastic organizing bins and towels. They also received a laptop computer for free.
Precious Jackson, who will be attending Monroe Community College in New York, says she's thankful she's able to leave for school a little more prepared.
"It makes me feel really good," Jackson said. "It makes me want to give back to the community when I'm older because I want to be able to help another kid out that has the same ambition as me."
Kate Hazarian, Director of Family and Commuity Engagement, says the nonprofit partners with the district each year to provide gift cards and laptop computers for college-bound students.
"Kids Helping Kids is completely run by high school students," Hazarian said. "That we're able to pull all this together to support 35 young people, I feel really proud."
