California State Fair Attendance Numbers Continue To Dip

Attendance numbers for the California State Fair have been dropping since 2015, and 2018 was no different.

A press release from Fair officials estimates that 572,250 people took part in this year's festivities, which took place from July 13 through the 29.

That number represents a nearly 11 percent decrease in attendance from 2017.

Here's the breakdown from the last five years:

  • 2018 = 572,250 attendees
  • 2017 = 636,628 attendees
  • 2016 = 673,237 attendees
  • 2015 = 787,833 attendees
  • 2014 = 750,000+ attendees

The press release speculated that Sacramento's extreme heat, which happened 9 of the fair's 17 day run, caused low attendance.

Fair officials say that between 20,000 and 60,000 people went per day and fair-goes spent roughly $8.5 million of food and beverages. Nearly 29,000 pounds of food was donated by attendees for the Elk Grove Food Shelter.

The state fair used to happen in August, but moved to July in 2010 because of all the school districts that start in August.
