Daryl Dragon, the "Captain" of the 1970s musical duo The Captain and Tennille, died today of renal failure. He was 76. Ex-wife Toni Tennille says she was with him when he died, and calls him a "brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly."
Dragon played keyboards for the Beach Boys from 1967 to 1972. The "Captain" nickname came from Beach Boys singer Mike Love, who noted that Dragon always wore a captain's hat onstage during their performances.
He met Toni Tennille in 1971, and they married in 1975, just as their first single and album, "Love Will Keep Us Together", went to #1 on the singles charts and number two on the album charts. They divorced in 2014.
