The Search for Heaven Can Wait, A Local Family's Memorial Day Story

A few months ago, a volcano near Papua New Guinea erupted....it pummeled villages on a remote island and it interrupted the work of US Army divers.  Those divers where there to recover an aircraft called, "Heaven Can Wait". They were led there by the efforts of a local family and dozens of volunteers...determined to find out what happened to the crew of that B-24 bomber on a rainy March day in 1944. Project Recover is a group of veterans that takes these types of cases. They agreed to search for Heaven Can Wait after seeing the family's research. Below are three clips telling the story of the search and discovery of Heaven Can Wait. I'll be loading more pictures and interview audio clips throughout the day.

The next three clips are from my latest interview with Diane Christie of Folsom.

  1. She talks about getting a letter from the mother of a military diver working to recover Heaven Can Wait. The mom talks about the pride and connection her son feels on this mission.
  2. Diane tells me about the Heaven Can Wait families "reunion" and a relative of another crew member who got access to an eye-witness report of a last salute from one of the crew of Heaven Can Wait as the plane was going down.
  3. Diane describes what its like to meet other families who are connected to her own through war and history
  4. Diane talks about when divers will return to retrieve the Heaven Can Wait which is more than than 300 feet under water.
