Hate Crimes On The Rise In San Francisco

While the number of reported hate crime remains relatively small in San Francisco, there has still been an sizeable increase that bucks a small downward trend statewide and nationally.

The FBI says it received 68 total hate crime reports in the city during 2018, which is a 58% increase over 2017. That includes attacks on people based on sexual orientation or religion. Those motivated specifically by race or ethnicity skyrocketed 115%. City officials attribute the increase partly to better reporting of hate crimes.

Newly-elected District Attorney Chesa Boudin is promising to take a strong stand against those who threaten basic human rights.
