Inmate Dead After Attack By Other Inmates At Folsom Prison

A California prison inmate is dead after he was attacked by two others in the yard at Folsom Prison near Sacramento.

Prison officials say inmates Joshua J. Dunn and Stephen C. Dunckhurst were seen attacking the other inmate in a outdoor area shared by the general prison population. They also say inmates were quickly ordered to drop to the ground, but Dunn and Dunckhurst ignored the command, so guards used pepper spray and non-lethal blast grenades to break up the fight.

The guards reportedly called for an ambulance and started life-saving measures, but the inmate was later pronounced dead the prison hospital. His name hasn't been released, while officials attempt to notify his family.

Dunn and Dunckhurst were put into a segregated inmate facility at Folsom Prison, as an investigation into their role in the attack is conducted.

Dunckhurst was serving time for several criminal convictions, including a life with the possibility of parole sentence for vehicle theft that made him a "third-striker." Six years were tacked on to his sentence for a conviction on a charge of making a deadly weapon in the prison. He also was sentenced to another life with the possibility of parole for assaulting another inmate while in custody in Kings County. Nearly three years were added to Dunckhurst sentence for resisting and officer and taking his weapon at the Kings County facility.
