California's Governor Looking To Spend Big On Homelessness

Governor Gavin Newsom says he wants to spend another 1.4 billion dollars to get homeless people off of the street. Half of that money would be spent on rental assistance programs, emergency shelters, and providing more facilities and services for people experiencing homelessness. The money would be funneled through community agencies and other providers, so decisions on how it's spent should be made at that the local level.

Newsom says he is also trying to secure nearly 700 million dollars of federal money for the expansion of MediCal in an effort to cover those who are homeless.

The governor's budget proposal is expected to be submitted to the legislature by the end of the week.

The Trump administration has been highly critical of California over the state's handling of the homeless crisis.
