Sac County Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Injure Man Saturday In Rancho Cordova

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department reports that deputies assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department shot and wounded a man during a foot chase on Saturday night. The deputies were reportedly responding to a vandalism call about 7:10 p.m., when they saw a man in the 10400 block of Investment Circle. Sergeant Tess Deterding says they ordered the man to stop for questioning, but he ran away. At one point the suspect pulled out what deputies thought was a firearm and pointed it at them while running behind a building and out of sight, according Deterding.

"When they reacquired sight of the suspect, he again pointed a firearm at the deputies," Deterding told reporters. "Four deputies fired their duty weapons at the suspect, striking him."

The unidentified 22-year-old man was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. None of the deputies were hurt.

There was confusion as to whether the suspect actually pointed a gun or something else at the deputies. Some witnesses say he did fire at the deputies, Deterding said. Those eyewitness accounts haven't been confirmed, and other witnesses say the gun wasn't real.

Deputies say they found damage to a fence, and the person who called the Sheriff's Department says the man was stealing a hose from a business.

Department policy requires the deputies be placed on paid, administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation of the shooting by homicide detectives and Internal Affairs.
