Chinese Researcher, Possible Spy Gets Sac Court Date Despite COVID Concerns

The Chinese researcher facing charges of lying to American officials about a suspected connection to the military in China and the Communist Party in that country in order to enter the U-S to work at the University of California, Davis finally has a trial date. Her lawyers are still trying to convince a federal judge in Sacramento that she'll never actually go behind bars during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Juan Tang's trial is due to start on February 8, 2021, but her lawyers claim she will most likely be sentenced to time already served after being arrested for falsifying her visa application. Tang gave herself up after vanishing from the university and seeking refuge at the Chinese consulate in San Francisco earlier this year. Federal courthouses in Sacramento and several other California cities have been ordered closed in response to the latest of wave of the virus.
